Srinagar: Hello Readers, Welcome to JK Student Update! In this article, I, Danish Ahmad, delve into the latest transformative update from the Central Board of Secondary Education, reshaping the marking system for CBSE’s 10th and 12th board exams.

Understanding the New Evaluation Norms

CBSE, in an official statement, declared the discontinuation of awarding overall divisions or distinctions to students writing the board exams. The decision, as per sub-section 40.1 (iii) of Chapter -7 of the Examination Bye-Laws, refrains from assigning an overall division/distinction/aggregate to students.

Criteria for Percentage Calculation

Dr Sanyam Bharadwaj, CBSE Controller of Examinations, elucidated the criteria for computing students’ percentages. It was clarified that the board does not calculate/inform/declare the percentage of marks; this responsibility rests with the admitting institution or employer, especially for higher education or employment purposes.

Implications and Reactions

This unprecedented decision by CBSE has sparked diverse reactions. Sanyogita Sharma, Director of Manav Rachna International Schools, hailed the move as a welcome change aligned with the essence of NEP 2020. She highlighted the positive implications, such as reducing academic pressure, fostering a holistic approach to education, and promoting a shift from exam-oriented learning to comprehensive learning experiences.

 Addressing Concerns and Encouraging Clarity

However, concerns exist regarding the impact on students’ motivation and recognition of their accomplishments. Sanyogita Sharma suggests that clear guidance on evaluating performance indicators could mitigate these concerns. Additionally, the decision to allow the admitting institution or employer to choose the best five subjects for candidates who have appeared for more than five subjects has been positively received.
